Install the latest version of WhatsApp 2.12.45
Get it from any of these links and install it. (You may need to remove the previous version manually)

Once Installed open WhatsApp > Settings > Chat Settings > Chat Backup
Tap on Google Drive Backup Settings
Now log on to your Gmail account
Best settings are to keep the backup on over Wi-Fi only or over Wi-Fi and Cellular.
This way you will free up your smartphone storage and stay assured for your valuable data.
